SEG at GeoForum 2007 Targeting the Future July 11-13, 2007 (Halfway House, South Africa)

SEG will be exhibiting and sponsoring a student event at GeoForum 2007, the 107th Annual General Meeting of the Geological Society of South Africa.  The theme for the meeting, Targeting the Future, is set against the backdrop of a steadily depleting mineral reserve base and the need for increasingly sophisticated methods of exploration, evaluation, and mining technologies.  For more details on the Student Geocongress, GeoForum, and Trade Show, please contact the secretariat at geoforum@rca.co.za.

SEG-CODES Student Chapter Field Trip to Kyushu District July 21-26, 2007 (Kyushu, Japan)

The SEG-CODES Student Chapter invites industry participants on a field trip to the legendary Kyushu District of southern Japan to study epithermal gold mineralization, hydrothermal analogs, and associated volcanic activity.  This trip is based on the original SEG Fieldtrips to the region (SEG Guidebook Series Volume 34) and will be led by Professor Eiji Izawa (University of Kyushu), Professor Sachihiro Taguchi (Fukuoka University), and Associate Professor Tetsuya Nakanishi (Kyushu University Museum). The trip will begin with visits to the Kuji and Aso Volcanoes and continue south to the Kirishima Volcano, Akeshi and Kasuga epithermal Au deposits, and finally underground at the Hishikari epithermal Au deposit.  There are only three industry places remaining at a cost of AUS$3000 (excluding flights).  If you are interested in attending or would like more information, please visit the website at www.geol.utas.edu.au/studentchapter.

SEG at the 9th SGA Biennial Conference August 20-24, 2007 (Dublin, Ireland)

SEG will be organizing a technical session entitled "Compressional Tectonics, Expanding Resources: Exploration Advances in the Tethyan Belt" within the overall theme of the conference theme “Mineral Exploration and Research: Digging Deeper”.  More information available at www.conferencepartners.ie/sga2007/cfp.html.

SEG-Queen’s University Student Chapter Field Trip August 25-September 8, 2007 (Brazil)

The SEG-Queen’s University Student Chapter in Kingston, Ontario, Canada is organizing a field trip to visit the diverse metallogenic districts of Minas Gerais, Brazil.  Site visits may include Vazante (Zn silicates), Morro Agudo (MVT Pb-Zn), Morro do Ouro (Au), Araxá (Nb), and Cuiabá (Au), and Poços de Caldas (U-processing plant).  Other sites under consideration are the Coromandel Region (alluvial diamonds), Ouro Preto region (topaz), and the Itabira or Mariana Complex (Proterozoic iron formation).  Field trip participants include graduate and senior geoscience students and at least one economic geology professor.  Industry participation and sponsorship is being sought – please contact Steve Beyer (beyer@geoladm.geol.queensu.ca) to be added to their mailing list.  Additional information is available at http://geol.queensu.ca/societies/seg/.

SEG at AGS 2007 Ores & Orogenesis Symposium September 24-30, 2007 (Tucson, USA)

In conjunction with Ores & Orogenesis (Circum-Pacific Tectonics, Geologic Evolution, and Ore Deposits – a symposium in honor of William R. Dickinson), SEG will be presenting a symposium on “Advances in the Understanding of Supergene Processes” as well as a pre-symposium field trip. This trip will visit porphyry copper occurrences of the American southwest including deposits at Safford and Morenci, Arizona, and Tyrone, New Mexico.  For details on the SEG events, please go to http://azgssymposium.org/pages/seg-activities.php.  Full details on the symposium can be viewed at www.agssymposium.org/.

SEG Gold Workshop pre-World Gold Conference October 20-21, 2007 (Cairns, Australia)

The Society of Economic Geologists will present its workshop on "Gold Deposits: Geology, New Developments, and Exploration" as a two-day course prior to the AusIMM World Gold 2007 conference.  It will be presented in Cairns, Australia on October 20-21 and attendees need not be registered for the conference to participate in the course.  However, registration for the course is through the conference website at:

www.ausimm.com/gold2007/workshops.asp

The course is similar to those previously presented in Moscow, Beijing, and Chile, and is now being presented in Australia for the first time.  Speakers will include Richard Goldfarb (Orogenic gold deposits), Craig Hart (Intrusion-related gold systems), Noel White (Epithermal gold deposits), and Steve Garwin (Carlin-type gold deposits).  Materials presented will be rich in geological descriptions of some of the world's best examples of these deposit-types, and include sections on tectonic- and structural-settings, geochemical and geophysical signatures, and exploration methods.  This workshop will be of interest to all geologists, particularly those involved in the exploration for gold resources.

GSA Annual Meeting October 28-31, 2007 (Denver, Colorado, USA)

SEG will be organizing a number of topical sessions at the GSA meeting entitled “Earth Sciences for Society – Beginning of the International Year of the Planet Earth” – the SEG meeting coordinator is Paul Bartos (pbartos@esperanzasilver.com).  There will also be a field trip (in conjunction with IGCP 486 on Au-Ag-telluride-selenide deposits) to the Cripple Creek gold mine – this is being organized by Paul Spry (pgspry@iastate.edu).  The following sessions are being sponsored by SEG: “The Environmental Geology and Geochemistry of Mineral Deposits: Best Practices for Effective Prediction, Mitigation, Closure, and Remediation”, “Metallogeny and Isotope Geochemistry—New Approaches, New Perceptions, New Paradigms”, “Understanding Mineral Resources: Educating the Public for Sustainable Mineral Resource Development”, “Magmatic Nickel Sulfide Deposits: Geology, Geochemistry, and Genesis”, “Au-Ag-Te Se Deposits and Other Precious Metal Deposits”, “Diversity in Crustal Fluid Compositions: Geological Origins and Consequences”, and “Geologic Structures, Fluid Flow, and Ore Deposits.”   For details on the GSA conference, please go to www.geosociety.org/meetings/2007/.

The abstract submission deadline is July 10, 2007.
