SEG will be organizing a technical session entitled "Compressional Tectonics, Expanding Resources: Exploration Advances in the Tethyan Belt" within the overall theme of the conference theme “Mineral Exploration and Research: Digging Deeper”.  This conference will have over 340 papers being presented in 22 thematic sessions and 58 posters.  Papers will be presented on a number of major new discoveries and there will be four parallel sessions each day.  All of the papers will be published in a pre-Conference volume available exclusively to registrants.  More information available at www.conferencepartners.ie/sga2007/index.html.

SEG at GSSA Diamonds in Kimberley Symposium August 23-25, 2007 (Kimberley, South Africa)

SEG will be exhibiting at the Geological Society of South Africa’s “Diamonds in Kimberley” Symposium in Kimberley, South Africa, on August 23-24.  Considerable exploration and mining activity in the past 12 months around Kimberley has resulted in the recovery of some exceptional and large diamonds from the alluvial deposits.  This symposium is a tribute to the diggers and diamonds of Kimberley and will be marked by a number of activities including technical sessions and field trips to classic mines and dumps.  Details and information on how to register and/or exhibit are available at http://www.gssa.org.za/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=94 or you can download the brochure (1 MB) by clicking on http://www.gssa.org.za/archive/Diamonds-Kimberley-Information.pdf.

SEG Nickel Workshop pre-GSA Conference October 27, 2007 (Littleton, Colorado, USA)

This one-day workshop entitled "Nickel sulfide deposits associated with komatiite and komatiitic basalt magmas” is planned to take place at the new SEG Course Center that is currently under construction in the SEG Headquarters building.  The workshop will be presented by CSIRO’s Stephen J. Barnes (Editor of the recent SEG Special Publication “Nickel Deposits of the Yilgarn Craton”) and Mike Lesher from Laurentian University.  The workshop will introduce attendees to komatiites (petrology, volcanology, and geochemistry) and discuss essential characteristics and classification of komatiite-hosted deposits.  Ore genesis discussions and exploration strategies will focus on deposits in Western Australia (Yilgarn Craton) and Canada (the Raglan and Thompson Belts).  We estimate that seating will limit participation to 50 participants, so please stay tuned for a formal registration announcement.
